The Director of Military Operations presents his compliments to the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, and begs to acknowledge the receipt of Sir M. Ommanney's note of the 16th June 1906, on the subject of Mr. Lorcher's map of the province of Canton (Kuang-tung).

Major General Grierson begs to offer the following remarks:-

Mr. Lorcher's map is taken chiefly from Chinese maps and is therefore, for those parts of the province which have been surveyed by Europeans, not the most accurate work that can be obtained.

For instance, it might be made more accurate and complete in the neighbourhood of Hong Kong, Canton, and Kuang-chou-wan. Also roads, which are not shown in the map at all, might in some cases be inserted.

It would therefore be a mistake to reproduce the map exactly as it stands. In the less known parts of the province...
